Connection: Spending quality time with others, working on relationships, enjoying companionship. We are made to live in community, as much as we may enjoy our own company, at heart, humans are social creatures who thrive on positive connections with others. So work on those relationships, spend time in communal activities / hobbies that bring you pleasure and enhance positive connection with other people.
Exercise: I don't know about you but that's a bit of a dread word for me. Exercise doesn't have to be strenuous to improve health though. It can be a short walk in nature, intentional walking five minutes at a regular pace, three minutes at a brisk pace for 16 minutes then turn around and do the same thing on the way home. Alternatively, dancing, swimming and yoga or pilates classes are all great ways to improve strength and stamina.
Learn new skills: Keeping your brain active by learning new skills is a great way to improve self esteem and confidence and can also improve your social life as you engage with learning together with like-minded people.
Kindness: who knew that being kind to others, the act of giving whether financial or time is so good for us? It increases endorphins and our oxytocin levels, the happiness hormone. So as we do something kind for someone else, our body releases a chemical reaction that makes us feel good and even works to help improve our physical health!
Mindfulness: learning to be present in the moment, focusing on what is happening in our bodies; how we are physically and emotionally reacting to whatever is happening around or to us; is a great way to improve wellbeing as we learn to recognise negative triggers and learn to manage our reactions to them.

When we build a life with someone, our sense of self often intertwines with theirs over time. Our routines, decisions, and even our dreams become shared. So when that relationship ends, whether through divorce or bereavement, it’s not just the person we lose. We can lose ourselves, too.

There are many ways in which we can lose our sense of self as life changes and I thought it may be useful to think about three of the major ones in separate blogs.

This quote feels particularly relevant at the moment. We are living in times where negativity, sorrow and frustration seem to fill the air. It’s hard to ‘see the wood for the trees’ on some days when the news cycle is filled with division, fear, and uncertainty. Yet, have you ever noticed how, when you try to find something positive to say or do for someone else, it not only lifts them, but it also makes you feel lighter and brighter, even if only for a short while?

Sometimes it feels as if we’re never going to see the end of a stormy period in our lives and the frustration, anxiety and loss can feel overwhelming but suddenly the sun will come out from behind the clouds; the situation will ease; something will change in our reaction and life will feel brighter and the burdens and worries will feel lighter.
